A tense Pakistan Super League clash has turned into a major talking point after Fakhar Zaman was accused of ball tampering during Lahore Qalandars’ match against Karachi Kings.
The incident unfolded in the final over of the game, with Karachi needing 14 runs to win. During a brief pause, Fakhar was seen in discussion with Lahore captain Shaheen Afridi and pacer Haris Rauf. The ball was exchanged between Fakhar and Rauf, which caught the attention of the on-field umpires.
Soon after, the umpire inspected the ball and, following a discussion with the square-leg official, awarded five penalty runs to Karachi Kings. The ball was also replaced, adding further drama to an already tight contest.
That decision proved crucial. Karachi successfully chased down the modest target of 129 with three balls remaining. Abbas Afridi played a decisive role at the end, striking a boundary and a six to secure a four-wicket win.
Following the match, the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed that Fakhar had been formally charged. However, the batter has denied any wrongdoing during an initial disciplinary hearing conducted by match referee Roshan Mahanama. A final decision is expected after another hearing in the coming days.
Captain Shaheen Afridi also addressed the situation, stating that the team would review available footage before drawing any conclusions.
If found guilty, Fakhar could face a suspension of one or two matches, as per PSL regulations for a first offence.
Ball tampering remains one of cricket’s most serious violations, with past incidents leading to strict punishments. One of the most notable examples involved David Warner, Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft during the 2018 scandal in South Africa, which resulted in lengthy bans.
As the cricket world awaits the verdict, the incident has once again raised questions about fair play and pressure moments in high-stakes matches.
