At Kennedy Space Center, the countdown is underway as four astronauts prepare for a historic mission to circle the Moon — marking humanity’s return to deep space after more than 50 years. NASA is targeting a launch window opening at 6:24 p.m. ET for its towering Space Launch System rocket, which will carry the Orion spacecraft into orbit. Onboard are astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen.
The mission, part of the Artemis program, will see the crew travel around the Moon before returning to Earth. Within hours of launch, the Orion capsule will separate from the rocket, allowing astronauts to manually test the spacecraft’s controls in orbit. Despite excitement, challenges remain.
Engineers continue to monitor potential hydrogen leaks and other technical issues that have delayed previous attempts. Weather conditions and last-minute complications could still affect the final launch timing. If successful, this mission will represent a major step forward in humanity’s efforts to establish a long-term presence beyond Earth.
