Pakistan Earns Less Than 1% from Global Pink Salt Market

Pakistan possesses one of the largest reserves of Himalayan pink salt in the world, yet earns only a small fraction of its global value.

The country holds an estimated 22 billion tonnes of pink salt reserves and produces nearly 98% of the world’s supply. This salt is exported to more than 90 countries annually.

However, most exports are in raw form with prices ranging between $60 to $80 per tonne.

After export, foreign companies process, refine and package the salt, selling it in international markets for $500 to over $1,000 per tonne.

The global pink salt industry is currently valued at over $13 billion but Pakistan earns only about $100 million per year, which is less than 1% of the total market.

Experts suggest that by focusing on value addition, branding and product diversification including gourmet salts, cosmetics and decorative items Pakistan can significantly increase its export revenue.

With proper investment and strategy, the country has the potential to turn this natural resource into a billion dollar industry.
