China’s Three Gorges Dam has once again captured global attention for its massive scale and scientific impact with claims that it has slightly affected the Earth’s rotation.
Located on the Yangtze River in Hubei province, the Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world generating vast amounts of electricity and supporting China’s energy needs.
Beyond its size and power, scientists have noted that the dam’s enormous reservoir holds such a large volume of water that it can subtly influence the Earth’s balance. By redistributing mass on the planet’s surface, it has reportedly caused a minor slowing of Earth’s rotation, although the effect is extremely small and not noticeable in daily life.
The project is widely considered a landmark in modern engineering showcasing China’s ability to execute large-scale infrastructure and energy projects.
However, the dam has also been part of global discussions around environmental impact, displacement of communities and ecological changes in the region.
Despite debates, the Three Gorges Dam remains a symbol of technological advancement and human capability often described as one of the most ambitious construction projects in history.
