A group of 10 countries, including Pakistan has strongly condemned Israel’s interception of a humanitarian aid mission heading toward Gaza.
The joint statement, issued by the foreign ministers of multiple nations including Turkiye, Bangladesh, Brazil, Indonesia and Spain, condemned the actions taken against the Global Sumud Flotilla.
The flotilla, described as a peaceful humanitarian initiative, aimed to highlight the ongoing crisis in Gaza and deliver much-needed aid to civilians affected by the ongoing conflict.
According to the statement, the interception by Israeli Navy and the detention of activists represent serious violations of international law and international humanitarian law. The ministers expressed concern over the safety of civilians onboard and called for the immediate release of all detained individuals.
Among those detained was Saad Edhi, the son of Faisal Edhi and grandson of the late philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi.
The flotilla had departed from Turkiye after previous attempts to reach Gaza were also intercepted. Reports indicate that activists from multiple countries including Indonesia and Ireland, were part of the mission.
On the other hand, Benjamin Netanyahu defended the interception stating that Israel would not allow any attempt to breach the naval blockade imposed on Gaza, which has been in place since 2007.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions surrounding humanitarian access to Gaza, where residents continue to face shortages of food, medicine and essential supplies due to the prolonged blockade.
The joint statement called on the international community to uphold its responsibilities, ensure the protection of humanitarian missions, and take concrete steps to ensure accountability for violations of international law.
