LONDON: Andy Burnham has been appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, becoming the country’s seventh leader in a decade after Keir Starmer stepped down.
Burnham, elected unopposed as leader of the Labour Party, formally took office after being invited by King Charles III. In his first address outside Downing Street, he pledged to bring political stability and introduce a new economic model to address the cost-of-living crisis.
He said immediate measures would be announced to provide “breathing space” for citizens, while committing to maintaining fiscal discipline and avoiding risks to the economy.
Burnham also vowed to prioritize social care reform and tackle homelessness as part of his early agenda, while hinting at potential tax adjustments to address rising public spending pressures.
