Titanium Dioxide in Food May Pose Greater Health Risks

NEW RESEARCH IS RAISING FRESH CONCERNS ABOUT TITANIUM DIOXIDE IN FOOD with scientists suggesting that the widely used additive may have effects on the body that deserve much closer scrutiny.
Titanium dioxide has long been used by food manufacturers to make products appear brighter and whiter or to enhance certain colours. It can be found in a range of processed foods, particularly sweets and snack products, while titanium dioxide particles are also used in several non-food applications.
The latest concern centres on the substance when it is present in nanoparticle form. According to a peer-reviewed study led by researchers at Jiaxing Nanhu University in China, titanium dioxide nanoparticles may interfere with the body’s intestinal endocrine system, affecting hormones involved in digestion, appetite and blood sugar regulation.
The findings add to a growing debate over whether some food additives have been adequately assessed for their long-term effects on human health.

What the new study found
Researchers compared three groups of mice: one group received titanium dioxide nanoparticles, another was given larger titanium dioxide microparticles, while a third group received no titanium dioxide.
The animals exposed to the nanoparticles showed changes in several gut hormones. These hormones play important roles in signalling fullness, supporting digestion and helping regulate glucose levels.
The nanoparticle group also recorded significantly higher blood glucose levels than the group exposed to larger particles.
Researchers suggested that the nanoparticles may interfere with enteroendocrine cells, which are responsible for producing hormones involved in energy intake and glucose regulation.
The study linked these disruptions to potential risks associated with obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
However, the findings came from animal research and should not be interpreted as proof that consuming titanium dioxide causes these conditions in humans. They do, nevertheless, raise questions that researchers and regulators will need to examine through further investigation.

Why titanium dioxide is controversial
Titanium dioxide has faced increasing scrutiny in recent years because of concerns surrounding its use in food.
The European Union banned titanium dioxide as a food additive in 2022 after a safety assessment concluded that there were concerns about possible genotoxic effects, meaning the substance could potentially damage genetic material.
Researchers have also investigated possible effects involving the immune system, nervous system and digestive tract.
The controversy has reached some of the world’s biggest food brands. A lawsuit in the United States brought renewed attention to titanium dioxide in sweets, while some manufacturers subsequently moved away from using the ingredient.
In contrast, the US Food and Drug Administration has continued to regard approved uses of titanium dioxide as safe under current regulations.
That difference in regulatory approaches has become an important part of the wider food-safety debate.

The bigger food-safety question
The latest research highlights a broader problem: consumers often have little visibility into the complex chemicals and additives used in highly processed foods.
An ingredient may be present in a product for a specific technological reason such as improving colour or appearance without offering any nutritional benefit.
That raises a basic question for regulators and manufacturers: when an additive is not essential to the nutritional value of food, how much uncertainty should consumers be expected to accept?
Public-health advocates have already called for tighter restrictions on titanium dioxide in food. Groups have petitioned the FDA to reconsider its position, arguing that emerging scientific evidence warrants stronger regulatory action.
The challenge is to separate genuine scientific evidence from exaggerated claims. Food-safety decisions should not be driven by fear, but neither should regulators wait indefinitely when credible research identifies potential risks.
The new findings therefore deserve careful follow-up rather than dismissal.
More research will be needed to establish whether the biological effects observed in animals also occur in people and whether normal dietary exposure represents a meaningful health risk.
But the debate over titanium dioxide in food is unlikely to disappear. As scientific understanding of nanoparticles develops, regulators may increasingly be required to reconsider whether decades-old safety assessments remain sufficient for today’s food system.
For consumers, the issue is ultimately about transparency and precaution. If an additive provides little nutritional value but carries unresolved health questions, manufacturers and regulators should have a clear responsibility to explain why it remains necessary.
Food should not simply be safe according to yesterday’s standards. As new evidence emerges, the standards used to protect consumers must evolve with it.
