Embassy and High Commission perform almost the same functions, but the name depends on the relationship between countries. An embassy represents one country in a non-Commonwealth country and is led by an ambassador, while a high commission represents one Commonwealth country in another Commonwealth country and is led by a high commissioner. Both help citizens abroad, issue visas, promote trade and culture and manage diplomatic relations. For example, India and the UK use high commissions, while India and the US use embassies.
