Electrostatic discharge can make your body carry up to 35,000 volts without you even noticing. This happens due to the Triboelectric effect like when you walk on carpet or remove clothing. You only feel the shock when the charge suddenly jumps to another object, usually above 2,000–3,000 volts. Despite the high voltage, the shock is harmless because it lasts for an extremely short time releasing very little total energy so for a split second, you’re essentially acting like tiny lightning.
