Fans Reject Proposal to Replace Iran with Italy at FIFA World Cup

Football fans in Milan have shown little enthusiasm for a controversial proposal suggesting that Iran be replaced by Italy in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.

The idea, reportedly floated by a US envoy to former President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino was met with criticism from both officials and the public in Italy.

Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi dismissed the suggestion outright, stating that qualification for the World Cup must be earned on the pitch, not decided politically. Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti went further calling the proposal “shameful.”

Football experts also rejected the idea noting that if any team were unable to participate, replacement should follow established qualification rules rather than political considerations.

FIFA has reaffirmed that Iran will take part in the tournament emphasizing that sport should remain separate from politics. Despite regional tensions, there has been no official indication that Iran will be barred or withdraw from the competition.

Iran has already secured qualification for its fourth consecutive World Cup and is preparing for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The proposal has therefore been widely seen as unrealistic with fans and officials alike stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of international sport.
