Growing Support for EU Return Gains Momentum in Britain

A decade after Brexit, public opinion in United Kingdom is shifting with more than half of voters now supporting rejoining the European Union rather than maintaining limited economic ties.

Recent research shows that around 53% of Britons favor a full return to the EU, while support is especially strong among voters of major progressive parties like Labour Party, Liberal Democrats and the Greens. However, the current government approach focused on maintaining partial alignment without full membership still holds moderate backing, though only a small portion strongly supports it.

Experts warn that Labour’s cautious stance on EU relations could cost it support, particularly among pro-European voters and key constituencies. Political analysts argue that a “middle-ground” strategy may not satisfy either side, as rejoining the single market or customs union would require complex negotiations and raise concerns over sovereignty and regulatory control.

Since formally leaving the EU in 2020, the UK has diverged from dozens of European regulations, complicating trade and policy alignment. Critics say this has added administrative burdens and reduced Britain’s influence over rules it may still need to follow in certain sectors.

Prominent political voices, including former Labour leader Neil Kinnock, believe the long-term impact of Brexit could eventually push the country toward rejoining, although no clear timeline exists.

Economists also highlight that Brexit has had measurable economic consequences with estimates suggesting a significant impact on GDP. As debates intensify, pressure is mounting on policymakers to clarify the UK’s long-term relationship with Europe.

The findings reflect a broader shift in public sentiment suggesting that the Brexit debate is far from over and could play a major role in shaping the country’s political and economic future.
