Iran War Drives Up Hajj Costs as Fuel Prices Surge

The ongoing conflict involving Iran is now impacting one of the most important religious journeys in Islam the Hajj by significantly increasing travel costs for pilgrims.

Rising tensions in the Middle East have caused global jet fuel prices to surge by over 70%, directly affecting airfare. As a result, the Haj Committee of India has increased Hajj package costs by around 10,000 rupees (approximately $105) for Indian pilgrims this year.

Officials say airlines pushed for even higher fare increases but the government limited the hike. Despite this, the decision has sparked criticism from political and religious leaders, who argue that it places an unfair burden on lower-income Muslims, many of whom save for years to afford the pilgrimage.

The Hajj, held annually in Mecca, is one of Islam’s five pillars and is mandatory for Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake it. Each year, millions of pilgrims travel from around the world with countries like India and Indonesia sending large numbers.

The rising costs have already forced some individuals to cancel their plans. For many working-class pilgrims, the increase represents a significant financial setback.

Meanwhile, some governments are choosing to absorb the additional costs. Indonesia, for example, is considering covering millions of dollars in extra expenses to prevent passing the burden onto its citizens.

The situation highlights how global conflicts and energy market disruptions can have far-reaching consequences affecting not just economies but also deeply personal and religious experiences.
