A new study published in the European Heart Journal shows that adding small amounts of vigorous exercise to daily routines can significantly lower the risk of multiple chronic diseases. Researchers found that even brief high-intensity activity can improve *heart health, metabolism and overall longevity.
The research, based on data from the UK Biobank, tracked hundreds of thousands of participants over several years. It found that people who performed just a small portion of their daily activity at higher intensity had a much lower risk of developing serious conditions.
These include dementia, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and respiratory illnesses. The study also showed a reduced risk of early death among those engaging in more intense physical activity.
Experts explain that vigorous exercise, such as running, fast cycling, swimming or climbing stairs, increases heart rate and breathing delivering faster health benefits compared to moderate activity. Even short bursts of effort in daily life like brisk walking or carrying heavy items can make a difference.
The key finding is that just a few minutes of high-intensity movement daily can improve cardiovascular fitness, insulin sensitivity, brain function and immune health. Researchers suggest that as little as 4% of total daily activity done at high intensity can lead to major health improvements.
With rising sedentary lifestyles, obesity, and chronic disease risks, experts recommend incorporating short, intense activity bursts* into everyday routines for better long-term health.
