Karakoram Highway Stands as Pakistan’s Engineering Marvel and Strategic Lifeline

The Karakoram Highway is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable engineering achievements in the world connecting Pakistan with China through some of the highest and most challenging terrain on Earth. Often described as the “roof of the world road,” it represents both national pride and strategic importance.

Stretching approximately 1,300 kilometres (about 800 miles), the highway links Pakistan’s regions with China’s Xinjiang, passing through the rugged and scenic Karakoram Mountains. Its highest point is at the Khunjerab Pass, reaching an elevation of about 4,693 metres (15,400 feet) making it the highest paved international road in the world.

Constructed jointly by Pakistan and China, the highway was completed in 1979 and opened to the public in 1986 symbolizing long-standing bilateral cooperation. Built under extremely harsh conditions, it is often referred to as a modern engineering wonder.

Beyond its physical scale, the Karakoram Highway plays a crucial role in regional connectivity and economic development. It serves as a key route within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, facilitating trade, tourism and cultural exchange between the two countries.

The highway also offers breathtaking landscapes, attracting tourists from around the world and boosting local economies along its route. Its importance continues to grow as infrastructure and trade initiatives expand under regional cooperation frameworks.
