Only 20% Sunscreens Are Safe in 2026, Experts Warn

A new report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has revealed alarming findings about sunscreen safety, stating that only about 20% of products available in 2026 provide safe and effective protection against harmful UV rays.
The annual guide analyzed 2,784 sunscreen products and found that just 550 met the required standards for protecting skin from both UVA and UVB radiation the two main causes of skin damage and cancer.
Health experts, including dermatologists are increasingly concerned about the rise of misinformation on social media platforms, where influencers are spreading false claims about sunscreen and sun exposure. According to specialists, such misinformation could increase the risk of skin cancer worldwide.
The report recommends sunscreens that avoid harmful ingredients such as oxybenzone and homosalate chemicals that studies suggest may disrupt hormones and remain in the bloodstream for extended periods. These substances have already been banned in several regions due to environmental and health concerns.
Experts highlight that mineral-based sunscreens, which use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are generally safer as they sit on the skin and physically block UV rays rather than being absorbed into the body.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to finalize updated regulations on sunscreen ingredients, despite raising safety concerns about several commonly used chemical filters back in 2019.
In a positive development, the FDA is considering approval of bemotrizinol,a modern UV filter widely used in Europe that offers strong protection with better safety data.
Doctors also emphasize that sunscreen alone is not enough. A layered approach including protective clothing, sunglasses and avoiding peak sun hours is the best way to reduce harmful exposure.
Children are especially vulnerable, experts warn. Even a few severe sunburns during childhood can significantly increase the risk of developing melanoma, one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer.
Health professionals strongly advise the public to ignore misleading social media trends that downplay the dangers of sun exposure. Ultraviolet radiation remains a proven carcinogen and consistent protection is essential for long-term health.
