Pakistan Blue Passport Policy Debate: New Bill Sparks Discussion

A new debate has emerged in Pakistan over the Blue Passport policy after a recent bill was presented in the Senate of Pakistan.

The proposed legislation suggests extending the Blue Passport facility to former Members of Parliament (MPs) and their children, similar to privileges previously granted to senior government officials.

The Blue Passport, officially known as a service passport, is different from the regular green passport issued to citizens. It is typically granted to government officials and certain public office holders for official travel.

Under the proposed changes, former MPs and their families could receive this passport for a period of five years, subject to approval by authorities such as the Speaker of the National Assembly or the Senate chairman.

For government employees, policies have already been revised due to past misuse. Previously issued for five years, Blue Passports are now generally limited to six months, except for senior officials in grades 21 and 22 who remain exempt from the restriction.

One of the key benefits of the Blue Passport is visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 50 countries making international travel easier for holders.

However, the bill is still under review and has not yet been fully approved with further discussion expected in parliamentary committees.

The issue has sparked public discussion about privileges, policy transparency and passport regulations in Pakistan.
