Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the formation of a task force to develop a national waste-to-energy policy marking a significant step toward promoting sustainable energy solutions in Pakistan.
The initiative aims to convert waste into energy while encouraging private sector investment in the energy sector. According to official statements, the task force will review the current framework for waste-to-energy projects and analyze international best practices.
The body will identify key challenges, including legal, regulatory, financial and operational barriers and propose reforms to address them. It will also create a clear roadmap to implement waste-to-energy projects across the country.
Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari has been appointed as the convener of the task force. Other members include key government officials such as Musadik Malik and Bilal Azhar Kayani, along with provincial representatives and private sector stakeholders.
This move reflects the government’s broader focus on clean energy, climate change mitigation and economic growth. Waste-to-energy projects are considered an important solution for managing urban waste while generating electricity.
The policy is expected to improve energy sustainability, environmental protection and investment opportunities in Pakistan’s growing energy sector.
