Record-breaking rainfall caused severe flooding in Nagoya with the city receiving 104.5mm of rain in one hour on September 8, its highest hourly rainfall on record. Streets turned into torrents, manholes erupted with water and homes, roads and vehicles were flooded.
The Ueda River overflowed, while subway and railway services were suspended. Around 3,500 people sought shelter and nearly 400 Asian Games athletes and staff were moved to higher ground as a precaution.
The flooding comes just days before the 2026 Asian Games, which officially begin on September 19 with Nagoya among the main host cities.
