Terrorism in Pakistan is entering a more dangerous phase with civilians increasingly becoming the primary targets of attacks. Recent data shows a troubling rise in both the intensity and human cost of terrorism across the country.
According to the Global Terrorism Index 2026, Pakistan was the most affected country by terrorism in 2025. A total of 1,149 people lost their lives marking an increase of around 6% compared to 2024, despite a slight decline in the number of overall attacks.
While total incidents dropped to around 1,045, the severity of attacks increased significantly. Reports indicate a sharp rise in casualty figures showing that terrorist groups are carrying out more lethal operations.
Data from the South Asia Terrorism Portal further highlights the scale of the crisis. In 2025 alone, 655 people were killed in over 1,077 attacks. The trend has continued into 2026 with at least 245 deaths recorded in the first four months across 335 incidents.
Suicide attacks remain a major concern. In 2025, 53 people were killed and 131 injured in 28 such attacks. Early 2026 data shows continued activity with dozens of casualties reported in multiple suicide incidents.
Among militant groups, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan emerged as the most active and deadly. The group was responsible for more than half of terrorism-related deaths in 2025 carrying out hundreds of attacks nationwide.
Another major threat comes from the Balochistan Liberation Army, which has also intensified its operations. One of the most shocking incidents involved an attack on a passenger train highlighting the growing vulnerability of public infrastructure.
Recent attacks show a clear shift in strategy. Extremist groups are increasingly targeting “soft targets,” including courts, mosques, religious gatherings and public transport systems. Incidents such as attacks near the Islamabad District Court and religious centers demonstrate this alarming trend.
Experts warn that this shift significantly increases the risk for ordinary citizens, as attackers move away from heavily guarded military targets toward locations with minimal security.
The long-term impact of terrorism in Pakistan remains severe. According to available estimates, nearly 75,000 people have lost their lives due to terrorism-related violence over the years underscoring the scale of the ongoing crisis.
Security analysts stress that while counterterrorism operations have reduced the frequency of attacks in some areas, the evolving tactics of militant groups continue to pose a serious challenge for law enforcement and policymakers.
The rising toll and changing nature of attacks highlight the urgent need for stronger security measures, intelligence coordination and public awareness to counter the growing threat.
