Xi Jinping on Monday called for the mobilization of all sectors of society to actively participate in afforestation efforts, emphasizing that a healthy ecological environment is a shared asset that requires collective responsibility.
The Chinese leader made these remarks while taking part in a voluntary tree-planting activity in Beijing, where he was joined by senior officials including Li Qiang, Zhao Leji and Wang Huning.
Arriving at the plantation site in Changping District, Xi greeted the public before personally planting a variety of saplings. During the activity, he interacted with children, inquiring about their studies, daily routines and involvement in sports and environmental initiatives. He encouraged young people to set ambitious goals early in life, cultivate a passion for learning and nature and strive to become responsible contributors to society.
Speaking with officials and citizens, Xi highlighted China’s progress in ecological restoration, noting consistent increases in forest coverage and timber stock, alongside a steady decline in desertified land. He stated that these achievements position China as a global leader in greening efforts.
Xi also praised the recently adopted Ecological and Environmental Code, describing it as a significant step in strengthening the legal framework for building a “Beautiful China.”
Reaffirming the importance of afforestation, he called for sustained, high-quality efforts to advance greening programs. Marking the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) and the 45th anniversary of the nationwide voluntary tree-planting campaign, Xi stressed the need to enhance quality, promote green industries and ensure environmental initiatives deliver tangible public benefits.
He further underscored the importance of creating effective mechanisms to realize the economic value of ecological resources, while promoting coordinated urban and rural greening.
