US–Iran Conflict Timeline: From Pre-Emptive Strikes to Fragile Ceasefire Talks

The conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran escalated rapidly in early 2026 triggering a chain of military actions, leadership changes and fragile diplomatic efforts.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched what they described as a “pre-emptive” joint strike on Iranian targets marking the start of major combat operations announced by US President Donald Trump. The attacks significantly intensified regional tensions and pushed the Middle East into open conflict.
Shortly after the escalation, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was assassinated in US-Israeli strikes. In a swift political transition, his son Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed as Iran’s new supreme leader signaling a dramatic shift in Iran’s leadership during wartime.
Amid rising global alarm, diplomatic efforts were initiated. On April 8, Iran and the United States agreed to an “immediate ceasefire” following Pakistan-mediated negotiations, which was viewed as a rare breakthrough after weeks of fighting.
However, stability remained elusive. On April 11, high-level delegations from the US and Iran met in Islamabad for marathon talks lasting 21 hours but no agreement was reached exposing deep divisions over nuclear policy and security demands.
Following the failed negotiations, President Trump extended the ceasefire stating it would remain in place only if Iran submitted a revised proposal. At the same time, he reaffirmed that the US naval blockade would continue keeping pressure on Tehran and maintaining restrictions on key maritime routes.
The sequence of events highlights a volatile cycle of military escalation and fragile diplomacy with no clear long-term resolution in sight
