Canadians Turn Away from US Products

Canadian consumers are increasingly boycotting U.S. products amid the Canada-U.S. trade war forcing grocery chains to expand Canadian sourcing and find suppliers in countries such as South Africa, Morocco, Spain, Brazil and Honduras. U.S. produce still accounts for more than half of Canada’s fresh-produce imports, but its share of vegetable imports fell to 62.6% in July, from 69% in July 2023. Major retailers are responding with clearer country-of-origin labels and greater promotion of Canadian products. Canada is investing about C$3 billion over 10 years in greenhouses and other domestic food production to reduce reliance on imports. Grocers say diversified supply chains could provide greater resilience, although cheaper U.S. products may regain market share if trade tensions ease.
