Pakistani singer Abrar Ul Haq has alleged that the rights to some of his most iconic songs including the bhangra hit Nach Punjaban were “fraudulently” taken and sold to Bollywood without his consent.
Speaking on a recent podcast, Haq stated that he never authorised the use of the track in Karan Johar’s film Jugg Jugg Jeeyo, despite the song playing a central role in the movie’s promotion. He also claimed he has not received any financial benefit from its use.
According to Haq, a London-based company wrongfully claimed ownership of his music catalogue, including Nach Punjaban and Billo De Ghar. He alleged that forged documents and fake signatures were used to assert control over his work, leading to further complications such as copyright claims on platforms like YouTube.
The singer said the dispute has been ongoing for years and described the case as “open and shut,” adding that he is determined to reclaim his rights. He also suggested that other artists may have been affected by similar practices.
The controversy dates back to 2022 when Haq publicly accused Johar and his team of copying his song without permission. In response, the company Moviebox claimed ownership of the rights and stated they had sold them to Indian music label T-Series, which maintained that proper credits would be given.
While Haq has the option to recreate the track, he emphasised that the original belongs to him and should not be exploited without consent. The case highlights ongoing concerns around intellectual property rights and fair compensation for artists in the global music industry.
