China is reportedly urging government agencies to remove Microsoft Windows and switch to domestically developed, Linux-based operating systems, citing data-security concerns.
Officials are being encouraged to use systems such as Kylin OS and Unity OS, as Beijing accelerates efforts to reduce reliance on US technology.
The move comes ahead of the planned retirement of a customised Windows 10 system used by Chinese state agencies and reflects the wider US-China technology rivalry.
Despite the government push, Windows remains dominant among Chinese consumers, accounting for 87.64% of desktop web traffic in July 2026, according to StatCounter.
