Deadly Kyiv Shooting Leaves Six Dead, Hostages Rescued

A tragic shooting incident in Kyiv, Ukraine has left at least six people dead and 15 others injured after a gunman opened fire on civilians before taking hostages inside a supermarket.

According to authorities, the attacker began shooting in the Holosiivskyi district killing four people on the street before barricading himself inside a supermarket, where another victim was killed. One more injured person later died in hospital raising the death toll to six.

The suspect, identified as a 58-year-old man originally from Moscow, reportedly used a registered automatic weapon. Officials are investigating the incident as a possible terrorist act, while also working to determine the motive behind the attack.

Security forces launched a special operation after the gunman took hostages inside the store. Negotiators attempted to communicate with him for around 40 minutes but after receiving no response, special police units stormed the building. The attacker opened fire on officers during the operation and was ultimately killed.

Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that hostages held inside the supermarket were successfully rescued. Authorities have also revealed that the suspect had been living in the Donetsk region for a long time and had a prior criminal record.

Officials say investigations are ongoing with multiple theories being explored including possible links to extremism or personal motives. The attacker’s residence was also reportedly set on fire around the time of the incident adding further complexity to the case.

Mass shootings remain rare in Ukraine, even amid ongoing conflict making this incident particularly shocking. The attack has raised fresh concerns over public safety and the circulation of weapons in the country.
