A shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner has raised serious security concerns after a suspect allegedly attempted to target government officials.
According to the White House, the attacker sent a message indicating intent to target members of the administration before charging through a security checkpoint and opening fire near the venue in Washington, D.C.
Donald Trump and other senior officials were quickly escorted to safety as gunfire was heard outside the ballroom. Law enforcement sources said the suspect fired one or two shots before being subdued and taken into custody.
The suspect, identified as a 31-year-old individual from California is expected to appear in court as investigations continue into the motive behind the attack.
Security personnel, including Secret Service agents, responded rapidly to the situation preventing further escalation. Officials confirmed that no fatalities were reported, though the incident has intensified concerns over safety at high-profile political events.
Following the attack, Trump praised law enforcement for their swift response but also criticised sections of the media during a televised interview highlighting ongoing tensions between political leadership and the press.
Former President Barack Obama also reacted to the incident, urging the public to reject political violence and emphasising the importance of safeguarding democratic values.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, while discussions around enhancing security measures at major public and political gatherings have gained urgency.
