SUSAN SARANDON says her outspoken support for Palestinians continues to affect her career, even as public attitudes towards the Gaza war and US support for Israel appear to be changing.
The Oscar-winning actor made the comments at the Venice Film Festival, where she is promoting her latest film, The Echo Chamber. Sarandon said parts of the entertainment industry continue to distance themselves from her because of her political views and activism.
According to Sarandon, the public conversation surrounding Palestine has changed considerably since the beginning of the Gaza war in 2023. She argued that more people are now questioning the relationship between the United States and Israel, including the scale of American political and financial support for Israel.
Recent opinion polling in the United States has also indicated changing attitudes towards the conflict with support for Israel softening in some groups while sympathy for Palestinians has increased.
Yet Sarandon said those changes have not necessarily been reflected inside Hollywood.
The 79-year-old actor claimed she had continued to lose professional opportunities because agencies and industry figures were discouraging people from hiring her. For Sarandon, the experience illustrates the continuing divide between changing public opinion and the decisions made by powerful institutions within the entertainment industry.
Sarandon’s Hollywood controversy
Sarandon has been an outspoken supporter of Palestinian rights and was among the prominent Hollywood figures who publicly criticised Israel’s actions after the Gaza war began.
Her activism has previously had direct professional consequences. In 2023, she was dropped by United Talent Agency following remarks she made while attending pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
Despite the controversy, Sarandon has continued to speak publicly about Palestine.
Her appearance at Venice also came as the film festival itself became part of a wider conversation about Palestinian representation. Activists have called on organisers to display the Palestinian flag in recognition of Palestinian filmmakers and the suffering of civilians in Gaza.
Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera said the festival could not formally raise the Palestinian flag because Italy does not recognise Palestine as a state. However, he highlighted films being screened at the festival that portray the experiences and struggles of ordinary Palestinians.
The debate reflects the increasingly visible role of culture in discussions about the conflict.
A career that continues
Sarandon said the resistance to hiring outspoken critics of Israel is particularly noticeable when major film studios are involved. She suggested that her experience is not unique and that other artists have also faced pressure because of their political positions.
At the same time, she expressed gratitude towards filmmaker Andrea Pallaoro for casting her in The Echo Chamber, describing the production as a place where she felt accepted.
The film, based on the final screenplay by Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, features Sarandon as an ageing singer who hires a music producer recovering from drug addiction as she attempts to revive her career.
The Echo Chamber is among the films competing for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival with the award scheduled to be presented on September 12.
Sarandon’s comments nevertheless place the spotlight on a question extending beyond one actor or one film: how much professional space should artists have to express political views without fear of losing their careers?
Hollywood has long been a place where political activism and entertainment intersect but the consequences can be significant when an actor challenges powerful institutions or widely accepted positions.
For Sarandon, continuing to speak about Palestine appears to be a deliberate choice despite those consequences. Her experience also highlights the growing tension between changing public attitudes, political pressure and the entertainment industry’s response to controversial activism.
As the debate over Palestine continues to influence politics, culture and public life, Sarandon’s career demonstrates that speaking out can still come at a professional cost even for one of Hollywood’s most established stars.
