Two Chinese Mathematicians Win Fields Medal for the First Time, Marking a Historic Science Achievement

For the first time in history, two Chinese nationals have been awarded the prestigious Fields Medal, one of the highest honours in mathematics marking a major milestone for China’s growing influence in global scientific research. Mathematicians Wang Hong and Deng Yu were among the four recipients of the 2026 Fields Medal, an award often described as the “Nobel Prize of mathematics” because of its importance in recognising exceptional mathematical achievement.

The Fields Medal is awarded every four years by the International Mathematical Union to outstanding mathematicians under the age of 40. The 2026 winners also included mathematicians from Canada and the United States, highlighting the international nature of one of the world’s most respected scientific awards.

Wang Hong, 35, became only the third woman in the 90-year history of the Fields Medal to receive the honour. Her achievement has been widely celebrated as an important moment for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Born in Guilin, southern China, Wang is currently a professor at New York University and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques in France.

Wang was recognised for her groundbreaking research in harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory, where she solved a long-standing mathematical problem that had challenged researchers for decades. Her work represents a significant contribution to modern mathematical theory and demonstrates the impact of fundamental research on scientific progress.

Deng Yu, 37, was also awarded the Fields Medal for his advances in partial differential equations. Originally from Shenzhen, one of China’s major technology hubs, Deng is a professor at the University of Chicago. His research has contributed to deeper understanding in an important area of mathematics that influences fields such as physics, engineering and applied sciences.

The historic achievement has generated widespread excitement in China, with social media platforms celebrating the success of Wang and Deng. Many described the awards as a turning point for Chinese mathematics and a symbol of the country’s growing presence in advanced scientific research.

The recognition also reflects China’s long-term investment in science and technology. Over recent decades, the country has increased funding for research institutions, expanded academic programmes, and focused on attracting and developing world-class scientific talent. The Fields Medal victories are viewed as evidence of China’s ambition to become a leading force not only in applied technology but also in fundamental scientific discoveries.

Chinese state media highlighted the achievement as a challenge to the previous perception that China’s strengths were mainly concentrated in competitive and applied mathematics rather than original theoretical breakthroughs. The awards have also renewed discussions about academic talent and international education. Both Wang and Deng completed important stages of their academic journeys overseas after studying at Peking University. Deng continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later earned his PhD from Princeton University, while Wang completed graduate studies in France before receiving her doctorate from MIT in 2019.

Chinese mathematician Shing-Tung Yau, who received the Fields Medal in 1982 but was not a Chinese citizen at the time, praised Wang and Deng’s achievements as a fulfilment of a long-standing dream within China’s mathematics community. He expressed hope that more world-class mathematicians trained entirely within China would achieve similar international recognition in the future.

Wang credited her success to collaboration and the support of talented colleagues throughout her career, noting that major achievements in mathematics are often built through years of shared research, exploration and unexpected discoveries.

Deng also pointed to the steady accumulation of knowledge and experience among Chinese mathematicians as a reason behind the increasing global recognition of young researchers from China. He suggested that the achievements of Wang and Deng represent the result of years of development within the country’s mathematical community.

The historic Fields Medal wins mark a significant chapter in the global scientific landscape. They highlight the importance of investment in education, research and international collaboration while demonstrating how mathematical discoveries continue to shape the future of science and technology worldwide.
