Fashion designer John Galliano has cancelled a major exhibition dedicated to his career at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art following criticism over his past antisemitic and racist remarks.
The exhibition, titled John Galliano: Horizons had been scheduled to open in May 2027. It was also expected to provide the theme for the next Met Gala, one of the fashion industry’s most prominent annual events.
Galliano said on Monday that, after discussions with the museum and others involved in the project, he had concluded that cancelling the exhibition was the appropriate decision.
Galliano Acknowledges Past Controversy
Galliano said he remained responsible for the harm caused by his words and expressed regret for remarks that affected Jewish and Asian communities. The designer was dismissed as creative director of Dior in 2011 after a series of incidents in Paris. He was later convicted over antisemitic abuse directed at a Jewish woman in a restaurant. A court also heard allegations involving racist insults toward her South Asian friend and comments expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler. Galliano apologised for his behaviour at the time.
